According to Ovid, he was born about A.D. 16 or 28 and died about A.D. 18 (the date of the first extant book), and according to Justus Lipsius and other critics not earlier than A.D.
20 (the date of the second extant book). He was born on the 23rd day of October and immediately after his birth his nurse gave him a book of elegies; he consequently passed his life as a recluse, occupied only with books and studies (Tibullus 9).
